Garlic Butter Beef Tips And Mushroom Gravy

1 onion diced
8 oz white mushrooms, trimmed and sliced 1/4 inch thick
3 tablespoons olive oil for browning
2 pounds beef sirloin tips cut into 1-inch cubes, patted dry
